When In May’s Dynamics In The Morning EP ties together a unique blend of genres, from 80s rock to indietronica to orchestral in the creation of a highly unique sound. The EP wanders through a set of disparate music styles while still centering itself around common instrumentations, effects, and lyrical themes that bind it all together. In addition to their intriguing mixing of musical styles, When In May demonstrates a knack for emotive chord progressions, strong melodies, and engaging rhythms in this EP.
To say that the artist demonstrates wide ranging versatility here would be an understatement, as they seamlessly bounce between upbeat disco, 80s rock, anthemic indie, and orchestral styles over the course of the tracks. The band starts us off with an atmospheric Pink Floyd-esque instrumental track that would fit well on a playlist with tracks from The Wall. After mesmerizing us with a big wash of ethereal sounds, they take us immediately into a fast and upbeat indie disco style in track 2, Bigloud!. Track 3 takes yet another new musical posture, centering itself on a thick 80s guitar progression coupled with more pop-punk vocals. By track 4, we couldn’t possibly be heading in a new direction, but in fact we are. Well, I Muttered I Love You sets us into a trance with its downbeat, loungy atmosphere. Track 5, No One Can Change Her, is more of a driving indie rock song, followed by A Love Song, which has a big U2 stadium feel to it. The EP closes with On Monsieur’s Departure, an instrumental composition featuring lush and soaring textures layered together in a symphonic fashion. See what we mean by versatility? While perhaps overwhelming for the faint of heart, the EP is nothing short of a joy ride for those seeking a musical adventure.
In addition to its diversity of styles, the EP’s strong melodic hooks and emotive chord progressions are another aspect worthy of celebration. Some of the best moments of this EP take place when the lead vocalist lets go of restraint and leans into a powerful melody. In the chorus of the fifth track, No One Change Her, for example, the lead singer belts out the refrain in a manner that would surely win over a stadium crowd. Underpinned by a driving beat and big anthemic guitar echoes, the vocal really shines here.
Overall, Dynamics in the Morning by When In May is a creative journey through multiple genres with plenty of catchy vocal hooks and sentimental chord progressions to carry the day. The EP’s most exciting moments come when the lead vocalist grabs a powerful melody and fully embraces it. It feels like there is more to be explored here, and the possibilities are exciting. We are looking forward to further releases from this thought-provoking musical experiment.
