Music tends to grip us at different speeds. Some songs capture you on first listen with a simple, powerful hook, while others take a few listens to gain a deeper understanding. Of these two categories, the debut LP by @aerhart_ sits more decisively in the second group, presenting us with songs that have a tinge of pop sensibility but are mostly characterized by beautifully complex tapestries of sound. A nearly endless selection of drum samples, synthesizers, vocal effects, instrumentations, time and key signatures are present here, demonstrating the inner workings of an artistic mind at full freedom.
Aerhart’s music is truly genre-bending (a term I am usually hesitant to use), incorporating elements of hip hop, classical, pop, indie rock, and electronic, sometimes all within individual songs. The listening experience is invigorating and immersive, taking one through a variety of moods and emotions, from deep calm to upbeat dance feelings. At moments, the listener is shocked by the sheer intricacy of the auditory experience (in songs like Choices and Transmission); at others they find themselves jamming along with a simple guitar progression (A Minute More) or catchy dance beat (Didn’t Slow Down).
What I truly love most about this Brooklyn-based artist’s debut album is the fact that it ties together such a diverse palette of sonic elements into songs that are cohesive and accessible. The album’s lyrics are nearly as varied and impressive as its instrumentation, touching on a range of themes from relationships to control and freedom to inner motivations, all tied together by a common voice. The vocals themselves are well-executed and sit nicely within the broader soundscapes of each song.
Overall, I love the album and highly recommend it for anyone interested in modern music. I’ll be rotating some of my favorite tracks on the Up and Comers playlist each month, so you can tune in there or directly on Aerhart’s page. Congratulations to @aerhart_ on this exciting debut! Listen here
